- BUYING DOMAINS DIDN’T COST ANYTHING TILL 1995
Internet was emerging as the next big thing in the early 90s, and people were aware of the potential still they had many apprehensions about how to move forward in this field. So, until 1995, they didn’t have to pay any amount to own the domain names. It was a massive chance for people to own any domain names. In 1995, registering the domain names became a paid thing and initially did cost enough to make a hole in the pockets. For registering a domain name for 2 years, people had to pay $100 to Network Solutions, who got the rights to charge people for registration of domains. And now in 2018, at an average, almost one million domain names are being registered every month.
- EMAILS EXISTED FORMER THAN WWW
Now, who would have imagined using an email without World Wide Web or www? But that actually happened way back in the year 1984, before the World Wide Web even came into existence. Emails were sent to other computers that were interconnected, through the wires, and cables so, they didn’t have a URL and instead, there were numbered web pages. Since this was in the year 1984, so probably emails are older than most of us, amazing right?
- THE FIRST EVER MOUSE WAS WOODEN
Though the first modern computer was created in the year 1936, the mouse was invented almost 3 decades later, in 1964 by Doug Engelbart and it was made of wood with metal wheels supporting to roll back and forth. In the year, 1968 Engelbart gave the first demonstration of using the mouse with a Xerox Alto computer and became an integral part of the modern tech times.
- FONTS HAVE AN IMPACT ON PRINTERS INK
We are well aware that there is an infinite number of fonts available and we do use them differently depending on our requirements. Different fonts have different variations, we can change their sizes and obviously ensure better and impactful communication. But did you know that the use of a certain font can save your printers’ ink and vice-a-versa? This is because the lighter fonts have lighter strokes and hence, uses lesser ink as compared to bolder fonts. - WORLD’S FIRST ANALOG COMPUTER RAN ON WATER
Yes, you read it right. This computer wasn’t like electronic computers instead, this analog computer which was invented by a Russian scientist, Vladimir Lukyanov, ran on water. The computer was used to solve partial differential equations with a series of interconnected glass tubes that were filled with water. You would get the answers through levels in certain tubes while adjusting the taps and plugs changed the variables. And of course, the set up was very huge as compared to the modern compact computers.
- QWERTY KEYBOARDS AREN’T THE MOST EFFICIENT KEYBOARD
We all have wondered why the keys on the keyboard are patterned in QWERTY and not the usual ABC but never really tried to get an answer. Although, there are different theories behind this. The most popular and relevant one is, to slow down the typing speed and avoid the jamming of keys. But with the passing time, we have accustomed ourselves with this format, and it does seem very efficient in today. But hardly a bunch of us know that it is actually the keyboard layout designed by Dvorak that is more efficient and is said to be 20 times faster than QWERTY. Just to add on to the facts, Alaska is the only state that can be typed on one row of keys on the QWERTY keyboard. We bet you didn’t know that!
- 1994 – FIRST BANNER AD WAS INVENTED
Before 1994, the concept of banner digital ads was unknown to the world. Wired.com was the first company that marked the origin of this concept in the year 1994. Wired.com was a digital publication that was looking to arrange some revenue to pay their writers. Though it was a bit different from our current PPC marketing model, it did open a new direction for revenue earnings from digital ads. Taking a look at the current scenario, digital ads are the best way of generating revenues for websites. As a matter of fact, Google gets 97% of its revenue from ads.
- OUT OF THE TOTAL WORLD CURRENCY 92% IS DIGITAL
A lot of people in the world still doesn’t use digital platforms to undertake any kind of online transaction, and factually, world’s almost 92% currency is digitally managed, and only 8% is the physical money that we have in hand.
