Up until now, Amazon Alexa supported English commands. But from today, users in India will be able to communicate with Alexa both in Hindi and in Hinglish. Developers can start building Alexa skills for customers in India using the new Hindi voice model on the Alexa Skills Kit.

“India has uniquely challenged our AI teams with its cultural and linguistic diversity. We are thrilled to bring a suite of AI advances in multilingual understanding so that customers can interact with Alexa in different regional variants of colloquial Hindi. We are also grateful to Indian customers who contributed to Hindi development through the Cleo skill,” Rohit Prasad, Vice President and Head Scientist, Alexa AI, Amazon said on the occasion.

So what all tasks can Alexa perform when to talk to her in Hindi? Well, everything that she could when you interacted with her in English. You can ask Alexa for wheather updates. All you need to say is – “Alexa, aaj mausam kaisa hai?.” And if you want to ask Amazon’s virtual assistant to increase the volume of your smart speaker you can say – “Alexa, volume badhao.” You can also ask Alexa to control your connected smart home device. Just say – “Alexa, Geyser on karo” or “Alexa, TV mute karo”.

Alexa in Hindi will be available from today on all Amazon Echo smart speakers including the Amazon Echo Dot, Echo Show 5, Echo, Echo Spot, Echo Plus, Echo Input and Amazon Echo Show. Users in India will also be able to interact with Alexa in Hindi via Bose’s series of smart speakers which includes Home Speaker 500, Portable Home Speaker, Home Speaker 450, and Home Speaker 300. Apart from this, brands such as Motorola, MyBox, Boat, Portronics, Fingers, Sony, iBall and Dish will soon update their Alexa-enabled devices to support Hindi.

To speak with Alexa in Hindi, users will have to manually change the language in the Device Settings of the Amazon Alexa app. This will soon be going to changes as Amazon is working on a new feature that would enable users to speak to Alexa in Hindi and English without changing the language setting back and forth soon.
