A wireless router is an important part of your home or office. It’s your silent companion connecting all your gadgets to the internet. There is a lot to consider when it comes to buying a reliable and powerful performing router. The Linksys MR8300 wireless router packs powerful specs but could it handle all our devices while providing stable connection? Let’s find out.

Let’s face it, if you are like most of the world, you will probably end up hiding your WiFi router behind furniture or in a corner of your house. If that is the case, then the Linksys MR8300 design won’t matter much to you. The exterior design language focuses mostly on ventilation to keep the router cool and performing the task at full speed. There is a glossy black transparent glass which holds a single RGB light. It’s a simple design, and in general, we think the aesthetic is fine. There are a total of four high gain antennas which can cover the whole area. Talking about ports, there is 1x WAN port, 4x LAN port, power port and a USB 3.0 port which can connect to the printer or any USB based devices.

The Linksys MR8300 is an AC2200 tri-band router capable of maximum data rates of 750Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 1,625Mbps on each of the two 5GHz bands. It’s an 802.11ac based device which supports MU-MIMO data streaming and Smart Connect technology in which the router chooses the best radio band to use based on things like network traffic and available bandwidth. This router also supports seamless roaming in your house when paired with a Velop range extender. Specs-wise, it is powered by a quad-core CPU, 512MB of RAM and 256MB of flash memory. Managing and configuring the router is simple with the web-based console or with the same Linksys iOS or Android mobile app.

The MR8300 turned in solid results on our throughput performance tests. It scored an average of 84Mbps download speed on the 2.4GHz close-proximity test. With some wall barrier, the MR8300’s score of 71Mbps which was a bit slower. Over the course of a week, I used the MR8300 daily to watch videos, listen to music and do all kinds of work including gaming. It worked well for Battlefield V playing or watching the pros streaming games on Twitch, and it served me well. I stressed the router by listening to the Podcast while playing a variety of videos and moving data from the NAS(Network Access Storage) system. The audio and video came through skip-free and there was no noticeable lag.

If all you care about is performance and gaming is your main requirement, then the Linksys MR8300 is the right router for you. It may not set speed records, but Linksys MR8300 is a reliable, competent wireless router that does extremely well at long distances where competitors fall short.
