Xiaomi today launched its latest budget smartphones, the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus at an event in China.

The handsets highlight aluminium bodies, fingerprint sensor on the back and enhanced cameras. The company, however, hasn’t yet disclosed when the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus will be available in India. But  you can expect the devices to reach the country soon given the Redmi’s popularity among the masses.

Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus Specifications

The Redmi 5 is fueled by a 1.8GHz octa-core Snapdragon 450 SoC. And Redmi 5 Plus runs on 2.0GHz octa-core Snapdragon 625 SoC. They both are based on the 14nm FinFET technology. They both have the Adreno 506 GPU.

The Redmi 5 will be available in 2GB of RAM or 3GB of RAM. The Redmi 5 Plus will come in two variants 3GB or 4GB of RAM.

16GB or 32GB of internal storage will be available with the Redmi 5. 32GB and 64GB of storage options are available with the Redmi 5 Plus.

The Redmi 5 is comparatively smaller with a 5.7-inch HD+ (720×1440) display. The Redmi 5 Plus flaunts a larger display of 5.99-inch Full HD+ (1080×2160).

Both the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus offer 12-megapixel rear sensors, plus 1.25 micron pixels and LED Flash. Both have the 5-megapixel front-facing sensors coupled with Beautify 3.0 and Soft-Toned selfie light. And they run on MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1.

The Redmi 5 packs a 3300mAh battery that offers up to 12 days of standby time. The Redmi 5 Plus gets a larger 4000mAh battery that should give you around 17 days of standby time.

The brand new Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus present a full-screen display with narrow bezels and an 18:9 aspect ratio. The phones will use HD+ and FHD+ resolutions an inviting media and gaming experience. It also makes them among the cheapest smartphones in the market to sport nearly bezel-less displays.

Pricing and availability

The Redmi 5 costs CNY 799 (approx Rs 7,800) for the 2GB + 16GB variant and CNY 899 (approx 8,800 INR) for the 3GB + 32GB option. The Redmi 5 Plus will start at CNY 999 (approx 9,800 INR) for the 3GB + 32GB model and CNY 1299 (approx 12,700 INR) for the 4GB + 64GB storage option. They both will go on sale in China from December 12.
