Bollywood has a come a long way from its first ever movie Raja Harishchandra in 1913 which was a silent movie to movies like Bahubali that proudly narrates the story of Bollywood’s transformation. In every way, whether it is in terms of quality, quantity, technology or music we have witnessed an advancement in the movies that is commendable. The reason why Bollywood films are acknowledged not just in our country but in Hollywood and other parts of the world is by using the latest technologies in film production.

Until recently, like a decade ago, it was almost impossible to expect a Bollywood movie giving jaw-dropping experience to its viewers and making them believe that whatever they are showing was shot for real. Now is the most advanced era of Bollywood with filmmakers and production house doing some really serious advanced work and have reached its zenith. We can now see a whole new variety of movies that are being showcased every year whether it is Romantic, thriller, horror, comedy, fiction or animated. The use of technology is contagious in Bollywood and can be seen as a trend as soon it is used by one Production Company.

The kind of technologies that Bollywood has lately laid its hands on may not be better than Hollywood but is certainly at par with it and deserves an appreciation. We will now take a look at how Bollywood has beautifully adapted itself with the dynamic technology of today’s world.

This is a process where a person’s facial movements are electronically converted into a digital database with the use of cameras or laser scanners to create CG animations for movies and its real-time avatars. This technology was used for the first time in Bollywood with Rajinikanth starrer movie, Kochadaiiyaa. Aptly to say, this was one of a kind effort by its filmmakers to take the film industry a leap ahead. The movie is based on the theme of an old kingdom and battlefields with Great War sequences and this is exactly why it was important to use the Facial Performance Capture in order to do justice to the vision of its producers. Though it was a very huge risk for the investors the movie turned out to be worth the risk.

This is a technology used to create visual effects which are impractical to shoot in reality. Being one of the most popular software that is now being used in Bollywood movies in the current scenario. It has been quite some time that Bollywood has been using this software for creating scenes like stunts of a superhero, Crashes, blasts etc. but it seems that we at Bollywood have taken it forward to use this software in most of our films that can shell out a big budget for creating realistic backgrounds mostly or shooting double roles of an actor. It is interesting that on an average such movie use somewhere around 1000 VFX shots.

DHOOM 3: The Yash Raj movie based on a story of identical twins with major fight sequences have used the VFX technology extensively to convince its audiences that they are actually watching two Amir Khan sharing the same screen. die-hard fan and amusingly both the roles are played by Shah RukhKhan himself. Though there is a slight hint of being identical yet using the effects the technical team has managed to make them look different at the same time.

Just as the name suggests, superstar Shah Rukh Khan seems a big fan of using the latest technologies in his movies whether it is Ra. One, Chennai Express or Fan. In fact, the use of VFX in Fan received huge appreciation from the film industry and set an example for others as well.

KRRISH: Krrish can be referred to as the most loved superhero movie of Bollywood with a great plot and perfect use of VFX technology to make it a successful sci-fi movie. Yet again, the producers of this movie collaborated with Red Chillies VFX to create an extraordinary visual experience for its audiences.

BAAHUBALI: Of course, how can the discussion about best technologically sound movies end without mentioning the biggest film of this decade, Baahubali. The use of technology deserves an applause for making the movie such a pleasure to watch. The locations, the kingdoms, the army, the fight sequences almost all of it relied on special effects as most of the film was shot in studios. As we all know, the music in Bollywood films holds a special place because a typical Bollywood film is incomplete with music. The use of the latest technical equipment in Bollywood is not just limited to visual effects but a glimpse of it can also be seen in its music.

If we were to compare the songs a decade ago and the songs that we listen now, we can feel the difference. Earlier the songs were all about flashy costumes, locations, dance sequences but equal importance is being given to the music now. The industry is flooded with music technology which can be used to take Bollywood music by storm.

The technology used in composing music is very enhanced and sharp. Whether it is the surround sound music or the 7D and 8D technology that Bollywood has laid its hand on to. The music created with these effects gives you an impression that the music is coming from outside when heard through earphones. The use of electronic instruments to create music is another technical up gradation in Bollywood. The musicians are exploring a wide range of options using computers and special software to create sounds and effects.

India is a land of music and has been blessed by a huge heritage of classical music. In order to make a mark globally, we are making an effort to employ the latest technology and reach out to a larger number. Having said that, there is a huge gap that needs to be filled as far as the technical advancement in Bollywood music industry, is considered to be at par with the music produced in Hollywood and in other parts of the world.

It is quite evident that Bollywood has also decided to keep itself updated with the ever-changing technology and continue to lure its audiences not just in our country but across the globe. We hope to see some breath-taking visuals and great music in future Bollywood movies.
