Samsung Electronics has launched its flagship smartphones Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in India. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ were first launched internationally on March 29th. The S8 is available in the US for a starting price of $720. Instead of Qualcomm snapdragon 835 processors, both phones are running Samsung’s own Exynos processor in India.
The S8 and S8+ have 5.8 and 6.2-inch QHD (1440 x 2950 pixel) AMOLED screens respectively. Both the device features infinity display and bezel-less design to give the phone a striking look. Despite the significantly larger screens on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, the bezel-less design along with rounded edges and symmetrical sides make them compact and comfortable for one-handed operation. The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on both the front and back. On the front, both S8 and S8+ has a continuous surface with no buttons. Instead, they have given a more intuitive soft-key with a pressure sensor that is embedded under the display. Fingerprint scanner has been placed at the back, near the camera. I personally feel the placement of the fingerprint scanner should be elsewhere as my finger find difficult to reach.
Talking about the security features on Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, both the device comes with a defense-grade security platform Samsung Knox. In addition, both the smartphones are implemented with an Iris scanner, which is one of the most secure biometric identification systems on a phone. Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ also offer a choice of biometric technologies including a fingerprint scanner and facial recognition. This is in addition to the traditional options of pin and pattern so that consumers can select a secure authentication method that works best for them.
Mr. HC Hong, President and CEO, Samsung Southwest Asia, said, “With the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, Samsung is unboxing smartphones that transcend the boundaries of meaningful innovations. Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ extend our trust, our heritage of great innovation and stunning design and our ‘Make for India’ promise.”
Specs-wise, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ features Exynos 8895 Octa processors along with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB internal storage capacity which can be further expanded via microSD card slot. Samsung has not upgraded the 12 MP rear camera’s resolution but the phonemaker has said that the camera software has been improved. The 8 MP front camera sports a sensor with a f/1.7 aperture which provides better low-light photography than its predecessor. The phones come with 3,000 mAh and 3,500 mAh batteries respectively, and both are running Android Nougat 7.0 out of the box.
Samsung has also introduced its own personal AI assistant, named Bixby, which can be invoked with a special hardware button located at the side of the phone. However, Bixby is only active in the US and Korea currently. There is no information about the availability of the Bixby in India.
“The stunning Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ come with new design innovations alongside cutting-edge technology that includes a revolutionary camera, the industry’s first 10nm processor, Bixby and robust Phone+ offerings. These devices will offer our consumers a gateway to a new mobile life where the power of innovation will carry them beyond barriers,” said Mr. Asim Warsi, Senior Vice President, Mobile Business, Samsung India.
