First Impression

While tablets get all the attention these days, there is a reason why laptops continue to be the computing device of choice for most people. Laptops offer real keyboards for faster typing, they\’re better at multitasking. When you add light-weight and good battery back-up to that, laptop is a clear winner. The Dell Inspiron 11 3000 series offers all that. Running via the Windows 8 operating system, the Dell Inspiron 11 is a budget-friendly laptop offering users and consumers an 11.6-inch LED-backlit LCD touchscreen display with 1366 x 768 pixel HD native resolution, a 1.4 GHz dual-core Intel (Haswell) Core processor, and 4GB DDR3 RAM. Additional device features include a 500MB HDD, an Integrated Intel HD Graphics 4400 GPU, as well as USB 3.0, Ethernet, HDMI, Bluetooth 4.0, and Wi-Fi connectivity options. Those features are good enough to get your work done, on the move.

The Dell Inspiron has certainly got the looks to impress. When you look at it, the body feels like metal. However, it is plastic. The notebook\’s exterior has been coated in a silver soft-touch finish. The same finish can also be felt at the bottom. The Dell Inspiron feels really good in your hand. The laptop has a nice grip. It won\’t slip out of your hands, if you are hustling on a busy day. Weighing in at 3.15 pounds with a 0.83-inch thickness, the Dell Inspiron can go along with you everywhere. The notebook also has a fairly robust port spread offering three USB ports, HDMI, an SD card reader, Ethernet and headset jack. At the bottom, there are two speakers. On the left, you will notice the HDMI slot, two USB slots, the headphone jack and the power jack. On the other side, the SD card slot, another USB slot and an Ethernet slot sit perfectly. The Inspiron 15 keyboard is very comfortable to type on, offering excellent support and a very good layout. The keys are nicely spaced. I thought, I\’d struggle with the keyboard of a smaller laptop. But, the Dell Inspiron gave me no chances to complain. There is also a huge Touchpad, which helps use the Windows 8 gestures well. It has nicely textured matte finish that gives excellent traction. Speed and accuracy were pretty good, with barely any lag noticed. You can switch applications easily.

Screen and performance

The Dell Inspiron 11 11.6-inch LED-backlit LCD touchscreen display with 1366 x 768 pixel HD native resolution. It is not the brightest screens around. But, it offers value for the money that you pay. The touchscreen is responsive but it can lag. However, it happens only on rare occasions. At full brightness, the display will work well, if you are watching movies or browsing the internet. At medium or low brightness level, the display could\’ve been better. Windows 8 is a good interface, if you use it on a touchscreen laptop. With the Dell Inspiron, it\’s no different. The graphics were decent. However, if you want to play the latest games, be prepared to shell out a lot more money for a laptop with a powerful graphics solution. The Inspiron is powered by a 1.4 GHz dual-core Intel (Haswell) Core processor, and 4GB DDR3 RAM. It also features a 500MB HDD and an Integrated Intel HD Graphics 4400 GPU. The performance is a little disappointing. After you download a few applications, the Dell Inspiron slows down. Something that would frustrate you in the middle of a busy day. Overall system performance was average. While it might not be able to play the latest games, users will not have any problems typing documents, watching HD movies, ripping music through iTunes, or editing photos. Boot times were still quick.

Dell promised a battery life of up to 8 hours, 20 minutes. To be honest, the battery life would be one reason to buy the Dell Inspiron 11. It is really impressive. With Wi-Fi usage, the Dell Inspiron kept me away from the charger for almost my entire working day. After work, I charged the laptop and watched movies. So, the Dell Inspiron is good enough to last really long. The Dell Inspiron is perfect for students. This little machine is small enough to fit in your bag and has enough battery to last for long.

The Dell Inspiron 11 is a decent budget notebook with good looks and build quality. The keyboard is very comfortable to type on. The touchpad offers an excellent surface texture. The Dell Inspiron offers good value for your money. It is light-weight, has good looks and is a decent performer. I have always used a 15-inch laptop. But, this 11-inch laptop has changed my preference.
