Petit Pli: Kids grow up way too fast. Don’t they? Parents buy their clothes and it goes to waste in a few months. It’s like replacing the entire wardrobe every six months. This is wasteful and very expensive at the same time. An ace design engineer also went through the same dilemma. He used to buy clothes for his kids and was getting sick of going shopping every couple of weeks. Let’s meet the very talented – Ryan Mario Yasin who came up with Petit Pli!
Yasin experimented in his own home with fabrics where he cooked and added pleats even in the oven. According to Ryan Mario Yasin, “Children outgrow their clothes in a matter of a few months, yet we clothe them in miniaturized adult clothing, as opposed to designing them from the ground up. With 11 million children in the UK, I thought it was time we redesigned children’s garments. The structure deforms with the movement of the child, expanding and contracting in synchrony with their motion. If this concept was actually going to enter the market, I felt that I couldn’t focus on technology that was too far away from being market ready – shape memory polymers for instance. Pleats was a simple solution.”
He also said, “I believe new parents and young children are both at a stage in their lives where they are open to learning and absorbing new information—could Petit Pli instill a message that fast fashion is unnecessary and longevity is key? I really do hope so.” He added, “In order to increase our impact against overconsumption, we’re working hard at developing our range to encapsulate a wider variety of garments.”
Ryan Mario Yasin designed an accordion-like pattern which is ultra pleated. The specialty of this cloth is that it expands as the kids grow. This same piece of dress retracts when you have another baby. Yasin is an aeronautical engineer and has worked on foldable structures for small satellites. This inspired him to explore folding structures for solving this problem. The current lineup of Petit Pli depends on advanced materials which are still patent-pending. It is suitable for kids ranging from 4-6 months to 36 months of age.
After all the painstaking efforts, the result was an adorable little suit custom made for kids. This little suit is perfect for the kids when they are playing in the house or even in the backyard. These clothes are dynamic in nature and react according to the child’s motion. It keeps them comfortable while they crawl, run, jump and toddle. Petit Pli is also waterproof and windproof. It is expected that in future with some support, these clothes will even provide protection against cold.
