Optoma WU336 Projector Review: Light-Headed

Design

At first glance, the Optoma WU336 can overwhelm you with its compact size. The projector has a plastic body with main controls on the top of the device, the screen alignment controls at the front while the connecting ports are all located at the back of the device. Talking about ports, the projector has 2x HDMI ports, 1 USB type-A port, RJ45 port, VGA and 15 pins analog input. The Optoma WU336 doesn’t support Wireless connectivity which could have been nice additional features in terms of connectivity. There is a massive grill on both the side for ventilation and keep the lamp cool. Although the device looks chunky, due to its plastic body it doesn’t weigh so much. It comes with a VGA cable, one power cable, one remote control and user manual.

Performance

The Optoma WU336 is mainly targeted at customers looking to enhance their home entertainment options. It uses DLP that offer WUXGA (1920×1200 pixel) resolution with a 16:10 aspect ratio. It also offers 15000 hours of lamp life of approximately 3,500 hours on bright mode, 10000 hours on Eco mode and 12,000 hours on Dynamic mode. When it comes to brightness the device produces up to 3,400 ANSI lumens with a contrast ratio of 20,000:1. The black level response is not good, the dark scenes appear behind a very noticeable grey wash. In fact, the greyness remained visible over mid-bright content. Another important highlight is the noise, the Optoma WU336 cooling fans make a bit more noise when using it in Bright mode setting that delivers the most effective pictures. There is also a 10W speaker inside the projector which can perform well in medium-sized rooms. We would highly recommend you to get a separate speaker when watching a movie. Speaking of projection, the visuals are vibrant and watching a full HD content is a treat for sore eyes. The Optoma WU336 is 3D compatible and works with DLP link shutter glass which is not provided with the projector. 3D formats supported include side-by-side, frame-pack, and over-under.

Verdict

Given the price of Rs. 82,500 it is clear that this projector is ideal for home and small business usage. The Optoma WU336 delivers full HD performance – but if you value detail and clarity over contrast, the WU336 really a worth the price.
