App Annie said that India surpassed the US in 2016 to become the largest market for Google Play downloads.
App Annie is out with its quarterly report on downloads on the App Store and Google Play. It states that Google Play downloads grew 20 percent during Q2 this year. This boost in numbers was mostly driven by the increase in downloads from the growing markets of India and Brazil.
In Q2 2017, India firmly held onto its top position. Moreover, it also widened its lead further. The report says that India experienced its largest year-over-year market share growth of Google Play downloads last quarter.
A lot of this spreading out came from gaming and entertainment apps. The report gave special emphasis to video streaming apps like Hotstar and JioPlay. Brazil has surpassed the US in Q2 to become the second largest market in terms of Google Play downloads, just after India. This increase was reportedly fuelled by communication and gaming apps.
Some More Statistics
The iOS downloads grew by 5 percent year-on-year. China is known to be the force behind this growth. China, in terms of private consumption, has surfaced as the strongest market. This is in consideration with the growth for iOS with tier one cities like Beijing and Shanghai. They are performing like mature markets in the country.
On the other hand, iOS and Google Play expanded at 35 percent and 30 percent. Globally, the private consumption for iOS and Google Play was over $15 billion in Q2 2017. Now, this determines a 35 percent growth compared to previous years’ statistics.
While games remain the largest contributor to private consumption, in-app subscriptions in non-gaming apps are continuing to drive more global revenue. Video and music streaming apps like Netflix, Spotify and iQIYI gather revenue through in-app subscriptions. And they have topped among both, apps and games.
The global app downloads, across both Google Play and App Store, grew by 15 percent compared to previous years. As per the report, this nearly reached the mark of 25 billion in Q2 2017. “With downloads growing at a rate of 15 percent year over year and spanning nearly every industry, it is clear that mobile apps are an indispensable part of consumers’ lives,” App Annie commented.
