Huawei’s new Nova 3 is a sleek looking smartphone that taken some design inspirations from the P20 Pro. The Nova 3 has a glass back with gradient colourway making it one of the attractive and beautifully looking smartphones in the market. The review unit we received is the Iris Purple model, and the dual tone finish definitely gives it a unique aesthetic. Besides the design, the Nova 3 sports 19.5:9 aspect ratio which makes the device looks taller. It gives it a premium feel and comfortable to hold. The new Huawei Nova 3 has a minimalistic bottom bezel, which is a huge improvement over P20 phones. The top-notch houses dual camera, a speaker and ambient sensor. It is one of the few devices available in the market that feature dual cameras on the front inside a tiny notch. The fingerprint sensor is placed on the back, but the most interesting feature of the fingerprint sensor is the support for gestures. Swiping down can pull down the notification panel and swiping left or right can scroll between the images from the gallery.
The Nova 3 packs Huawei’s top-of-the-line in-house Hisilicon Kirin 970 processor, same processor can be found on P20 Pro which is a premium smartphone from Huawei. It also comes with 6GB of RAM to support heavy multitasking along with 128GB of internal storage which can be further expandable by up to 256GB via. MicroSD card slot. Throughout the review period, the Nova 3 performed extremely well without any hiccups. Even while heavy multitasking, the device never lagged and we were able to switch application easily. Talking about gaming, the Nova 3 comes with GPU turbo functionality which boosts gaming performance by up to 60% without consuming extra battery. The Nova 3 runs on EMUI 8.2 UI over the top of Android 8.1 Oreo operating system. Though the whole UI is pretty light, it does feel a little boring. There is no app drawer in EMUI, but there are several bloatware apps included in the device. Thankfully, we can uninstall all bloatware apps manually from the device.
Huawei Nova 3 packs Quad Camera, Dual camera on the front and Dual camera on the back. The back camera has a 24-megapixel + 16-megapixel sensor. While the 16MP is a colour sensor, the 24MP sensor is a monochrome sensor. The photo captured was sharp and detailed, thanks to the 24MP monochrome sensor. The camera can capture portrait shot but we feel the edge detection is not perfect and it still has a room for improvement. The front camera sports 16MP colour sensor and a 2MP monochrome sensor. Though the monochrome sensor is less than the rear ones, it still captures sharp selfies. Though the company provide fast fingerprint sensor, the front camera with a monochrome sensor can quickly capture your face to unlock even in dark environment.
Huawei is known for producing excellent value smartphones and the Huawei Nova 3 is no different. Even though it directly compete with OnePlus 6, it still stands strong by offering Quad Camera and a beautiful looking phone.
