When one talks about top-of-the-line gaming computers, they are more or less talking about a bulky Desktop with liquid cooling, space-age fans and what not. The main reason for it being that a Desktop ‘usually’ comes with powerful hardware that remains cooler and performs better than a conventional laptop.
However, with the everyday advent of technology, laptops are getting upto speed with most Gaming desktops and even outperforming them. The trend is changing, with more requirements of speed from an everyday user, there is an ongoing increase in demand of machines that are powerful yet portable at the same time. Now, to take care of this, Acer has a come up with a new laptop called the Nitro 5. Does it impress? Let’s find out!
Let’s talk about the Design first!
Acer has definitely focused on Gaming with the design of the Nitro 5. It features a rigid angular design with the red theme, this laptop is certainly not thick like most of the other beefy gaming laptops. The back has a really nice brushed aluminum finish, which is quite impressive and eye-catching right from the moment you place your eyes on it.
There is one thing that we are really thankful for that Acer has kept all the necessary connectivity port options for this laptop. Even though the Nitro 5 is thinner than many other Intel Core i7 based systems, it still comes with useful ports like USB, HDMI, memory card reader, audio jack and finally the Type-C USB port. The laptop also comes with a bright red backlit keyboard to provide convenience while playing in the dark which also enhances its ‘gaming machine’ feel.
Let’s go over to the Specs
The Nitro 5 is an excellent device that can perform process intensive multiple tasks rather than just gaming. Thanks to its 7th-generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, it performs like a beast and never slows down, even when substantial software or games are in operation.
Moreover, it features a 128GB SSD to significantly improve Windows load times as well as improved gaming performance. It has an additional 1TB of storage, thereby making it possible to store and save ample amount of important data.
Talking about the display, this laptop comes with a 15.6-inch full HD 1080p IPS display with a wide viewing angle of up to 170-degree, making it good enough display for an hardcore gaming, surfing or just watching run of the mill movies. It comes loaded with Stereo Speakers and Dolby Audio Premium Plus Acer TrueHarmony technology for a great audio experience while gaming and listening to music. Another noteworthy thing here is the impressive battery life. Now when one talks about a gaming laptop, battery life isn’t usually something you think about. However, the Nitro 5 offers quite an interesting battery life of 6-7 hours with mixed usage of heavy duty games and normal internet surfing.
Nitro 5 packs the latest NVIDIA 1000-series GTX 1050 graphics card that can generate a lot of heat, but the dual fans and Acer’s Coolboost technology are available to deal with that. The Nitro 5 is definitely built for gaming and gaming is something it does really well. The combination of the IPS screen and top-tier hardware means that the Nitro 5 managed to handle almost any game I wanted to play with ease.
Most of our time on the Nitro 5 was spent playing Battlefield 1, an FPS based game is actually a fairly demanding game when you run it at ultra settings. The laptop was easily able to keep up with the game when frame rate was locked at 60 FPS, with almost no dropped frames, even in the most chaotic situations. We also tested out the open-world GTA V, which is also one of the graphics intensive games played well at around 55-60 FPS on ultra settings and were again left impressed.
