Prime Minister Theresa May announced that under Article 50, Britain would finish the processing of withdrawing itself by March 2017 which would then be processed to be approved and put into effect by March 2019. This was a major decision on the part of UK that was seen as a bad call by some but was also taken as an inspiration by other members of the EU to follow Britain’s footsteps to leave the EU as well.
3. The real Champions
If you became a fan of the West Indies victory anthem “Champion”, then you’d also know why it makes sense. 2016 was a good year for West Indies as they achieved 3 feats- Men & Women T20 World Cups and Under 19 World cup. However, the journey to becoming champions for the Men’s team, as said by one of the cricketers, was rough. The team felt disrespected by the West Indies Cricket board and their manager on many occasions. However, they credit their coach for his constant support. And despite that, the team managed to pull of such a feat. They’re champions in the real sense!
4. Global Citizen Festival
Don’t mean to cause you any discomfort but if you didn’t go for the Global Citizen Festival, then you missed the treat of your life. If you saw the list of musicians and celebs attending the event, you’d die a little bit inside because you not only missed 90 minutes of pure Coldplay, but you also missed performances by a whole lot of other international performers like Jay-Z, Demi Lovato, The Vamps and Indian musicians like Shankar Mahadevan, A. R.Rahman, Farhan Akhtar and many others. Let’s just end it here because the event was way too grand to be described in words.
5. Kickass torrents got caught
The shutting down of our favorite download site probably made us the saddest we’ve got this year; well maybe not the saddest, but definitely quite sad. Kickass was a one point solution to get our hands on all our TV shows and Movies. It was when one of the servers operated by the owner of Kickass Torrents got located did the site shut down. It did seem a little unbelievable until the time the owner officially bid adieu to his loyal users in a heart wrenching way on his own website, thanking them for all the love. Now with no sure shot place to get access to all our entertainment, we’re all dazed and confused as we scramble and wander to find our favorite TV shows and Movies.
6. Bob Dylan wins nobel prize
If you know anything about Nobel prizes, you’d know what a big deal it is to be a recipient of one. In 2016, songwriter Bob Dylan became a Nobel laureate after winning a prize in Literature, that arguably might be one of the most important Literature awards. In October 2016, the Swedish Academy, that awards the Literature Nobel, was proud to bestow upon Bob Dylan the prestigious honor for having created new poetic expressions in the Great American song traditions. However, Bob Dylan was not very prompt in expressing his gratitude as he kept the academy waiting by not responding or accepting the prize sum. He also went ahead to refuse to come and accept the award stating “pre-existing commitments.” Whoa. Now that is what we call real attitude.
7. Netflix and Chill came to India
Going out to party on a Saturday night has always been the coolest thing to do. And if you didn’t, well blatantly put, you’re uncool; you’re socially awkward; you’re homesick. However, you could be forgiven if you didn’t go out only because Netflix and Chill. It wasn’t until Netflix made its debut in India in January did staying home in your pjs (even on a Saturday night, yes), binge eating your favorite junk food while you run film and TV show marathons became the cool thing to do. Thus, Netflix and Chill sessions became a whole new rage for those awaiting its entry in India.
8. Leo finally won an Oscar!
Good year, bad year, who knows. But it was definitely an amazing one for Leonardo DiCaprio who FINALLY won an Oscar for his performance in the highly acclaimed movie “The Revenant” earlier this year in February. The much coveted award touched and missed this actor so many times it was not even funny… until it actually became funny with all the memes on Social Media that picked on the actor for not owning one, even one Academy Award, despite giving brilliant performances and receiving multiple nominations. Not going to lie, his fans and even those who are not, all rejoiced as he marched to the stage to pick up the trophy only to kill it with his kickass speech. All this while, spotted seated in the audience was Kate Winslet, almost in tears. Kate, this time, we felt you, we did!
9. Priyanka Chopra goes International
Bollywood is no doubt a rich pool of actors and professionals who are truly talented when it comes to their respective crafts. Moreover, a lot many have gone ahead to expand their reach by getting involved in projects other than Bollywood’s, Hollywood to be precise. Actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Irfan Khan, Anil Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, etc. have been a part of Hollywood movies. However, one Bollywood actor who steals the limelight in this case is Priyanka Chopra who has constantly been in the news for some or the other new project that she has been doing internationally. She was also the first Bollywood actress to appear on the Ellen Degeneres Show in addition to appearing on multiple American Talk shows. Her repertoire includes the 2 seasons old Primetime hit show “Quantico” that she plays the lead in and Baywatch opposite Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron. However, Priyanka had started planting seeds to grow her rishta in the International scene even before being involved with acting projects with her album titled “In My City” in 2012. This calls for a shoutout to this strong lady whose dream is to be known as an achiever and not a pretty face or an actor, alone.
10. All good things have to come to an end
2016 has its own share of ups and down. While there were good times, there were times that had the whole world sighing in sadness. 2016 was witness to demises of many legends who, in their own ways, touched lives and left a mark. Some prominent personalities like APJ Abdul Kalam, Alan Rickman, Muhammad Ali, David Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen, Harper Lee, Frank Sinatra, among others left the world in 2016. All we can say is that they shall be missed dearly as they made the world a better place and we can only thank them for that.
11. Popular Movies this year
2016 saw a collection of amazing movies that were also path breaking in their own ways. Moreover, Indie and popular movies alike won hearts of people. Also, fans all across lost all chill when they knew Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was releasing this year. Also, fans all across lost all chill when then they knew Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was releasing this year. “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”, a movie belonging to the Harry Potter franchise also released later in the year.
12. The Pop Music scene
2016 was a good year for popular culture as Pop music’s favorite artists dropped their albums this year and they were instant hits, something that’s a given. The “Sorry” and “Love Yourself” hit maker Justin Bieber bounced back from a rough patch and how with his catchy songs that ruled the music scene this year. Next up is Adele who, after not releasing anything for a while, premiered her album with the chartbuster “Hello” that was an instant phenomenon. Beyoncé, who dropped her album featuring the popular track Lemonade, also took the music scene by a storm. Beyoncé also performed during the halftime at the 2016 Super Bowl alongside Bruno Mars and Chris Martin. All in all, pop music had a good year and deserves a spot in the highlight list.
13. Harry Potter returns with the 8th book
Easily passing off as the greatest news of the year for Potterheads was the release of a new Harry Potter book, the 8th and the final one titled “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” in July this year. Although there wouldn’t be a movie based on the book, the book did premier with a play based on it in London which, according to those who were lucky enough to watch it, was magical and marvelous. The book, that actually is an elaborate screenplay of the play, proved to be a perfect closure to the whole HP Universe and honestly, we couldn’t have asked for more. The book wasn’t actually authored by J. K. Rowling herself, but was planned and shaped with her constant involvement by two other playwrights, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany. Wouldn’t be surprising to state that the release saw an overwhelming response, just like all the preceding books (or even more), as Potterheads scrambled in huge numbers to get their hands on an exclusive hardcover copy of the same while thousands of others fans ordered the special version online.
Season 5 may have been a cliffhanger for the GOT universe as viewers mourned over Jon Snow’s death and prayed for him to somehow, magically, come back to life at the same time; but Season 6 was no less. The show that premiered in April had more twists and turns than the highways in Dubai and it had the GOT universe going crazy with the constant flow of theories, reactions and facts. The latest season was not based on the exact writing like the preceding seasons from the novel because author G. R. R. Martin hadn’t finished writing. That gave directors to shape up the episodes in a much different manner than the preceding seasons. Also, would it make you sad if I mentioned that Season 6 was the last complete season? The 7th and 8th seasons are slated to be shorter seasons with the series concluding with the 8th season. You can cry now.

In September, Reliance launched Jio sim cards which made people feel as if Christmas came early for all Internet lovers who hate to spend money on the same. It offered features like free calls to everyone, free network and 4GB of data daily at 4G speeds without having to pay anything at all until December 31, 2016. However, not everyone who went to get a sim card could get one due to the shortage.
16. Orlando shooting

17. Brangelina breakup
Brangelina fans all over the globe lost all ability to talk when they realized that they would no longer be able to use their favorite ship name “Brangelina” due to the shocking break up of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt this September. While there are articles and theories flooding the internet about who was the reason behind the breakup as loyalists defend their favorite star, this would remain a mystery, just like every other controversy. The two are currently fighting for custody of their 6 kids while trying to prove why they’re more eligible to take care of them. But, either way, it remains to be a sad news as yet another Hollywood dream romance comes to an end.
