01. Isro launched 140 rockets
India emerged as a key player in the Space surveillance and communication industry after successfully launching a record-breaking number of 104 satellites using a single rocket. It also proved its growing domination in the commercial market for its effective yet low-cost missions. India’s International Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved this unimaginable feat after the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV C37 launched India’s weather observation Cartosat-2 Series satellite alongside 103 nano-satellites into Space from its space centre in Sriharikota.
02. Mergers and Acquisitions
2017 was a year of sensational acquisitions and mergers. Verizon made headlines with its $4.5 billion acquisition of Yahoo, who had agreed to sell the company’s core internet operations to Verizon after looking for “strategic alternatives” for its core business. Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart acquired the Indian wing of eBay in April infusing $500 million into it as Flipkart doesn’t have the global presence. Axis bank, keeping up with its image of being one of the few tech-savvy banks in India, acquired Accelyst Solutions Private Limited and Freecharge Payment Technologies Private Limited for $60 million in order to ease digital banking. Airtel and Telenor also announced their high-profile merger to combat disruption caused by the new entrant Reliance Jio.
03. Donald Trump bans Immigrants
President Trump made news thus inviting wrath with his policies in the form of the Executive order that banned immigrants and visa holders from 7 Muslim-majority countries namely – Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Sudan and Somalia – to enter the United States for 90 days. It also banned refugee admission for 120 days in addition to putting Christian refugees before others. This move was claimed to give a clear reason for ISIS to start a war. However, courtesy to the numerous protests, the ban was later lifted.
04. Blue Whale Challenge
2017 wasn’t the first time that this deadly social media challenge surfaced on the internet but it definitely was the year it caught eyeballs by revealing the dark side of social media and internet. The challenge targeted vulnerable pre-teens or teenagers who were made to complete 50 tasks with the final one being committing suicide. Blue Whale originated in Russia and has claimed lives of over 130 boys and girls all over the world ever since.
05. Apple 10, Google Pixel 2 and S8+
Smartphones easily dominate human existence now that they have come to become parallel to humanity. No wonder Smartphone brands make world news and shape what the future innovations will be like with what they let out in the world. Like every year, Apple returned with a new launch in the form of the super amazing iPhone X to celebrate 10 years since the first phone was launched. Google didn’t lag behind and launched the super productive Pixel 2 model. This was also the year Samsung performed at par with its 8+ and made news for all the right reasons.
06. Chevrolet shuts shop in India
In what came as a surprising news to Indian auto-heads, General Motors recently announced the decision to pull the plug for Chevrolet in India due to poor sales, a struggle that wasn’t an unprecedented one. The company will be ceasing the sale of Chevrolet cars in the country on 31st December 2017 but will continue to manufacture vehicles from its Talegaon facility for export markets. 07. First Hyperloop test run
What can probably be called a new mode of transportation introduced for the first time in over 100 years, The Hyperloop is a super transportation concept that makes use of magnetic levitation and electrical charges to make transportation faster. The concept transitioned into reality after a successful first, though limited, full scale test run by Hyperloop One in a vacuum environment in mid-May at the company’s development test loop just north of Las Vegas where it hit nearly 2Gs of acceleration and a speed of 70 miles per hour during the run.

On August 21, for the first time in 99 years, the whole of North America witnessed a Social Eclipse of varying degree, a time when the Moon passes in front of the Sun thus casting darkness across patches on the Earth’s surface. 14 states like Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina experienced complete blackout right in the middle of the day with Illinois in Chicago experiencing the longest one lasting two minutes and 40 seconds.
09. Pop Culture moments, Breakups and Makeups
2017 was a year of major pop culture moments in the form of TV shows, movies and the breakup-makeups stories that made headlines. TV shows such as Game of Thrones, Stranger Things 2, Master of None returned with a next season for eager fans, while Big Little Lies and Taboo made super debuts. Movies Dunkirk, Star Wars: The last Jedi came with a bang while IT returned with a haunting sequel. At the same time, celebrity couples like the newly married Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, Miranda Kerr and Evan Spiegel and about to get hitched Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner gave us couple goals.
10. A great year for Sports in India
The second-most populous nation in the world made their first appearance at a FIFA event by qualifying directly as hosts of the FIFA U-17 World Cup which began on October 6 and played against USA, Colombia and Ghana. Despite drawing good attendance, people wondered whether qualifying really denoted any possibility of a substantial sustenance in the game. India finished bottom, 24th, among all teams that qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup. Meanwhile, the IPL completed its 10th instalment with great noise.

India has been a wonderful and ecstatic host to many international acts over the course of the last few years. However, 2017 was particularly special as Mumbai, India was witness to global popstars and headlining acts such as Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Chainsmokers, Alan Walker, Mike Posner, Cigarettes After Sex, Steve Vai making their way in, doing what they do and winning hearts.

Jeff Bezos, the Founder and CEO of eCommerce website Amazon.com, became the richest man for the second time on 24 October snatching the title from the now richest man Bill Gates twice this year. However, that title, both times, came with a short life. This occurred overnight when Jeff Bezos added USD10.4 billion to his net worth as Amazon shares rose 13 percent reaching a net worth of $93.8 billion, $5.1 billion ahead of Bill Gates. 2017 was a great year for Bezos who has added $28.5 billion to his fortune this year alone.
